How great of an honor is it to host an event such as the Olympics? According to Stefan Szymanski, ââ¬Å"the hosting of major sporting events has become the subject of intense competition among nations. Governments will make large financial commitments in order to win the bidding competition.â⬠The regression of big time sporting events have changed immensely, from firstly being about showing who the best athlete was, to now a way of nations being able to bring fame and possible fortunes to their doors for just hosting such huge events. 2000-2015 has been a time span where the conversation about the Olympics, itââ¬â¢s events, and itââ¬â¢s policies have changed. The Olympic games originated in ancient Greece, about 3,000 years ago (8th century B.C. to 4th century A.D.) (A+E Networks, 2015). The games took place in Olympia located in the western Peloponnese peninsula. At first the Olympic games were used as a religious festival in honor of the ruler of gods, Zeus. After many years the Olympic games were re-introduced in the 19th century, which was done to bring countries back together as one and participate in this world wide competition of olympians. The games as a whole have changed the way of how people see the athletes. In the beginning of it all, the athletes competed for their religious believes, now the race to be the best is at its highest, with the 28 sports to participate in.
